PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The Oregon Department of Transportation is testing half-mile markers along state Highway 217 and U.S. 26 in the Portland area.
The Oregonian reports (http://bit.ly/nkI6qR ) that posting signs with half-mile increments should help drivers give specific information in an emergency and improve accident statistics.
The new signs are larger than the old mile-markers and also include the name of the highway and direction of travel.
ODOT will review the pilot project in 2013 and decide whether to post half-mile markers along other highways.
