NEW YORK (AP) — Brandon Nimmo says a spending spree is not on the agenda now that he has signed his first professional contract.

The young outfielder has much bigger plans, like making his way through the New York Mets organization and getting to the major leagues. Nimmo, the Mets’ first-round pick in the June amateur draft, barely beat a deadline Monday night and signed a minor league deal with a $2.1 million signing bonus.

He quickly caught a flight Tuesday to Port St. Lucie, Fla., to join the Gulf Coast League Mets. He could get into a game by the end of the week.

Nimmo, of Cheyenne East High in Wyoming, was taken with the 13th pick. He played American Legion ball because Wyoming doesn’t have high school ball.
