SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Salem city officials are planning a runway extension at the municipal airport.
City and business officials say a longer runway would make Salem more attractive to companies looking to relocate.
Salem urban development director John Wales says the city is not competitive at 5,800 feet.
The Statesman Journal (http://bit.ly/qPLh2E ) says the airport’s two runways are shorter than runways in cities with similar populations.
The expansion to 7,000 feet would make the airport comparable to Redmond.
The project is expected to cost between $9 million and $11 million.
The city working on an environmental assessment and master plan that would allow the airport to get in the queue for as much as $14.4 million in Federal Aviation Adminitration funding during the next four years.
