ASPEN, Colo. (AP) — Daniele Callegarin of Italy, Canadian Andrew Randell and American Sergio Hernandez were taken to a hospital after being part of an eight-rider crash Wednesday early in Stage 2 of the USA Pro Cycling Challenge.

Callegarin, who rides for the American-based Team Type 1, suffered a concussion, two broken hands, severe facial lacerations and several other injuries, according to a team spokesman.

Callegarin is alert, according to a team spokesman, but will require extensive plastic surgery.

Randell and Hernandez were released from the hospital, according to the team’s physician, who was at the hospital with the riders.

The accident occurred when the riders tumbled on the cattle guard as they approached the Cottonwood Pass about 40 miles into the stage.

The second stage was scheduled to conclude Wednesday in Aspen.
