MIAMI (AP) — The National Hurricane Center says that Tropical Storm Irene is maintaining 50 mph (80 kph) maximum sustained winds as it nears the U.S.-Canada border.

Forecasters said Sunday evening that the storm, stripped of hurricane rank hours earlier, was moving north-northeast at 26 mph (42 kph). It was located 20 miles (32 kilometers) south of St. Johnsbury, Vt.

A tropical storm warning remains in effect from Manasquan Inlet, N.J. north to Eastport, Maine, including the New York City area, and for the U.S.-Canada border northeastward to Fort Lawrence and for the south coast of Nova Scotia.

Irene is expected to drop below tropical storm strength later Sunday.

Forecasters expect it to reach Canada later Sunday or early Monday.
