SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Jonathan Sanchez is making slow progress in his rehab from a sprained foot but the Giants’ left-hander is hopeful of pitching again this season.

Sanchez is eligible to come off the disabled list on Sept. 1, though that’s not likely to happen. He’s been wearing a protective boot on his left foot for five days and has not thrown off a mound since making his last start two weeks ago in Atlanta.

San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy on Sunday hinted Sanchez might be done for the season. He backed off those comments while speaking to reporters before the Giants game against the Chicago Cubs on Monday and said the team had no plans to shut Sanchez down for the rest of the season.

Sanchez has struggled this season with a 4-7 record and 4.26 ERA after playing a pivotal role during San Francisco’s title run last season. He was the Giants best pitcher last September when he went 3-1 with a 1.17 ERA.
