EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota Vikings have claimed quarterback Sage Rosenfels off waivers from the Miami Dolphins to replace the departed Donovan McNabb.

Rosenfels was brought in by Vikings vice president Rick Spielman in 2009. But he never played, stuck behind Tarvaris Jackson and then Brett Favre on the depth chart. He spent last season with the Giants.

The Vikings granted McNabb’s request to be released on Thursday, leaving them with only two quarterbacks on the roster. So Spielman elected to grab a known quantity to give them an extra body for the final five games of the season.

The move also allows the Vikings to continue to use Joe Webb at receiver. Webb was the primary backup to rookie Christian Ponder when McNabb was cut.
