LILLEHAMMER, Norway (AP) — Eric Frenzel won a Nordic combined World Cup event featuring a new format on Sunday.

Now, the length of the ski jump decides how many penalty rounds of 150 meters a skier has to complete during the 10-kilometer cross-country.

Frenzel jumped far enough to avoid any penalty laps. The German was second after the ski jump and finished the cross-country race in 28 minutes, 38.5 seconds.

France’s Jason Lamy Chappuis had two penalty rounds and ended second, 17.4 seconds behind Frenzel.

Germany’s Bjoern Kircheisen finished third, 20.6 seconds back, with two penalty rounds.

Christoph Bieler of Austria led after the ski jump, ahead of Frenzel and Maxime Laheurte of France.
