RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Danny Rocco is leaving Liberty to become the head football coach at Richmond.

Richmond said in statement Tuesday Rocco will be introduced on Wednesday as the 35th head coach in Spiders history. He will replace Wayne Lineburg, who held the job on an interim basis this season after Latrell Scott resigned only days before the opener following his arrest for drunken driving.

The Spiders won the Championship Subdivision national championship in 2008 and opened with a victory at Duke and two more victories this season, but lost their final eight games as injuries decimated their defense.

Rocco took over at Liberty following a 1-10 season in 2005 and never had a losing season. His record is 47-20 record in six seasons, including a 26-5 record in Big South Conference play.
