CORBETT, Ore. (AP) — A search is expanding for two Oregon sisters who failed to return from a day hike in the Columbia River Gorge.
The family of Leslie and Leesa Azar of Portland called authorities late Tuesday when they failed to return from a hike near Horsetail Fails after calling on a cell phone to say they were on their way back.
Sgt. Terry Hill of the Washington County sheriff’s office, who is the search and rescue leader, said the trails in the area are narrow, running through steep canyons.
More than 50 searchers are at the scene but there was no sign of either woman late Wednesday morning.
Despite frigid weather and wind in the gorge, Hill said forested areas above the gorge tend to be sheltered from the wind.
