PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (AP) — Mets manager Terry Collins now understands why Luis Castillo didn’t show up early for spring training. He just wishes the second baseman had told him sooner.

Castillo said Sunday after arriving at camp that he was spending time with his older brother before a serious surgery Monday. Collins had previously expressed disappointment that Castillo wasn’t at spring training early.

Castillo says he’s ready to compete with Daniel Murphy, Brad Emaus and Justin Turner for the starting job. Collins said again Sunday that second base was open and that all four would get starts during spring training.
