ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Greek sprinters Costas Kenteris and Katerina Thanou have ignored a summons to appear in court to be questioned in a perjury case.
The Sydney Olympic medalists are accused of staging a motorcycle crash to avoid a doping test on the eve of the 2004 Athens Games.
Kenteris’ lawyers says his client was unable to attend Monday’s hearing because of a “serious personal issue,” while Thanou’s lawyer had no justification for her absence.
The sprinters — whose absence has caused a string of previous trial delays — will not be held in contempt of court because they face misdemeanor charges over the accident, according to legal experts.
