BELLINGHAM, Wash. (AP) — A Whatcom County sheriff’s deputy has been injured and a suspect killed in confrontation north of Lynden, near the Canadian border.

The Bellingham Herald reports deputies responded Monday morning to a report of an out-of-control man breaking windows at a house.

When confronted, the man apparently struck a deputy in the head with a hammer.

KOMO Radio reports a Taser failed to subdue the man, and he was shot and died at the scene.

Undersheriff Jeff Parks said the injured deputy was conscious and talking when he was taken to St. Joseph Hospital in Bellingham.
