THE DALLES, Ore. (AP) — A Portland man is facing a number of charges after he was accused of kidnapping a woman and her young child before a rollover accident on Interstate 84 near The Dalles.

Oregon State Police said 31-year-old Benjamin Franklin Reed was charged with kidnapping, rape, assault, recklessly endangering another person and driving under the influence of intoxicants.

Troopers said Reed took the woman from the Portland home they share, along with the woman’s 23-month-old daughter, and forced her to drive east on I-84 until stopping early last Friday at a rest area, where the woman was assaulted.

She fled on foot a short time later, just before the accident was reported. Reed and the child were both treated for nonlife-threatening injuries.
