HOUSTON (AP) — Texans owner Bob McNair says the team has the strongest coaching staff it’s ever had following the hiring of Wade Phillips as defensive coordinator.
Phillips joined coach Gary Kubiak’s staff on Wednesday, two days after four defensive assistants were fired, including coordinator Frank Bush. The Texans (6-10) lost eight of their last 10 games, mostly due to a defense that ranked 30th in yards allowed (386.6 per game) and last against the pass (267.5 yards per game).
McNair says he’s never had more confidence in the team’s coaches. He touted the experience of the 63-year-old Phillips, who’s been a head coach in Dallas and Denver. He says Phillips will fix the Texans’ defense without needing widespread changes to the roster.
