SAN ANTONIO (AP) — NCAA president Mark Emmert says rules are needed so parents don’t “sell the athletic services” of their children.
Emmert didn’t mention Auburn quarterback Cam Newton. But his comments Thursday were a nod to the backlash the NCAA has faced in wake of the investigation surrounding the Heisman Trophy winner.
The NCAA ruled Newton could continue playing even though his father had been seeking money from schools recruiting him.
Emmert tackled recent criticisms the NCAA has faced over enforcement during his first state of the association address at the NCAA’s annual convention.
Emmert said the NCAA has begun discussing potential rules involving relatives of players. He did not give a timeline for possible changes.
