RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) — The family of an American-Palestinian man shot dead by Israeli police still hopes to have the officer who killed him tried for murder, even though the officer was cleared by authorities.

Israeli police said Ziad Joulani’s truck swerved into a group of police in east Jerusalem in June, lightly injuring two officers. Police said they gave chase, shot in the air when Joulani fled on foot, then shot him. He died later in a hospital.

Israel’s Justice Ministry acknowledged this week that the officer shot Joulani at close range while he was on the ground. It closed the investigation, finding that the officer believed the incident was a “terror attack.”

Joulani’s family lawyer, Hassan Tabjah, said the family would appeal.
