DETROIT (AP) — The injury-plagued Detroit Red Wings are trying to acquire goaltender Evgeni Nabokov.
Red Wings general manager Ken Holland confirms the team has agreed to a one-year deal, but Nabokov has to clear waivers in the NHL because he started the season playing in Russia’s KHL.
He goes on waivers at noon Friday, and the team should know his status by the time it hosts defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago on Saturday afternoon.
The San Jose Sharks didn’t offer Nabokov a contract to play this season. He made $6 million last season in the final year of his five-year contract.
Chris Osgood, Detroit’s backup goalie, had hernia surgery last week and is expected to be out until March. Starter Jimmy Howard has been slowed by a bruised right knee.
