PERUGIA, Italy (AP) — Independent forensic experts appointed by an appeals court hearing the trial of Amanda Knox have been given 90 days to conduct their review of crucial evidence linking the American student to the murder of her British roommate.

Knox was convicted in 2009 of sexually assaulting and murdering Meredith Kercher, and sentenced to 26 years in prison. Her co-defendant and ex-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito was also convicted and sentenced to 25 years.

The defense has disputed DNA traces used to back up their convictions and has sought an independent review.

The experts were formally sworn in Saturday. They will begin their review on Feb. 9, conclude by May 9 and report their findings to the court on May 21.
