CLARK COUNTY — Quick, look away from this page and spell “accommodate.” OK, how about “diphthong”? Now try “sesquipedalian.”

If you’re a stickler for correct spelling — and you carry the proper lineups of letters in your head — you might be interested in signing up for the second annual fundraising spelling bee sponsored by the American Association of University Women.

“Magic Spell” is set for May 15 and the AAUW is putting out the word this far in advance to start recruiting proud word nerds interested in rounding out four teams — representing Clark College, Washington State University Vancouver, the Friends of the Vancouver Library and AAUW. No site has been set yet.

The event will raise scholarship money for women to attend WSUV and Clark College.

Organizer Elsie Chan said she’s hoping this second annual event sparks a local tradition, with more teams of spellers organizing themselves and volunteering for future bees. Just keep in mind, Chan said, that no pencil and paper are allowed at this tournament — no test scribbling allowed.

If you’re interested in testing your spelling knowledge — and you’re at least 18 years old — call Chan at 360-597-3554.
