NEW YORK (AP) — Derek Jeter got his 2,999th career hit, singling in his first at-bat Saturday and moving one hit away from baseball history.

The New York Yankees star grounded a single through the hole into left field and smiled as he reached first base. The hit came against Tampa Bay All-Star David Price.

The 37-year-old Jeter is trying to become the 28th major leaguer to get 3,000 hits and the first to do it with the Yankees.

The Yankees have one game left on their homestand before the All-Star break. They open the second half with an eight-game road trip.
