Business name: Manning Academy of Cosmetology.

Owner: Jeff Manning.

Address: 8078 E. Mill Plain Blvd.

What the business does: Manning Academy offers education in the fields of cosmetology, esthetics and manicuring. Jeff Manning said all services provided in the salon, offered at a low cost to the public, are supervised by licensed instructors. Cosmetology students are trained in the classic styles as well as the latest trends, including highlights and feather extensions. Students receive training in manicuring techniques in gel nails and nail art. In the spa center, students are taught how to do basic facials, waxing and makeup applications to advanced techniques in microdermabrasion and chemical peels.

How has the economy affected your business: More people are seeking career changes because of economic challenges they’ve experienced. Because of re-training for a new career, the average age of his students has changed from early 20s to 30 and older, Manning said.

Greatest challenge: The greatest challenge is keeping up with technology and creating a balance between traditional advertising and social media. Manning also said it is a challenge to meet the scheduling and financing needs of his prospective students, because many are juggling a family and work schedule in addition to taking classes.

What’s ahead: Manning will be offering an evening program for cosmetology and advanced training for licensed professionals soon. He would also like to offer financial aid for students.

Year established in Clark County: Manning Academy first began as Magee Brothers Hollywood School of Beauty in 1964. Brothers Ron and Pat Magee opened two schools, one in Vancouver and one in Beaverton, Ore. Jerry Manning operated the Vancouver location for 10 years before he bought it from Pat Magee in 1974. Jerry Manning’s son Jeff, who graduated from Magee’s in 1980, bought Magee Brothers Hollywood School of Beauty in July 2004 and changed the name to Manning Academy of Cosmetology.
