BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — A top Argentine soccer official says Alejandro Sabella will take over as national team coach, replacing Sergio Batista, who was dismissed after the country’s poor showing in the Copa America.
Jose Luis Meiszner, secretary general of the Argentine Football Association, told the state news agency Telam in an interview that “Sabella is the one selected.”
Meiszner said Sabella would sign a contract to put him in charge through the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. The official said Sabella was likely to be officially unveiled as the new coach next week.
Sabella recently coached Argentine team Estudiantes.
