SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier says suspended quarterbacks coach G.A. Mangus would return to the field for opening practice.

Spurrier said by phone Monday that Mangus would coach when the team starts workouts at the Bluff Road practice field on Wednesday night. Mangus was suspended last week when police officers in Greenville caught him peeing in the street. Mangus was charged with nuisance conduct and has a court date on Aug. 26.

Mangus had been in Greenville to attend a gathering of high school coaches. The Greenville Police Department report said Mangus was unsteady on his feet and slurring his words.

Spurrier says athletic director Eric Hyman signed off on Mangus’ return.

Mangus is credited with helping improve the on-field performance of South Carolina starting quarterback Stephen Garcia.
