DUBLIN, Ohio (AP) — Rory McIlroy is making a detour before going to the U.S. Open. The 22-year-old from Northern Ireland is going to Haiti early next week as part of his work with UNICEF.
McIlroy signed up this year to do work with the organization that works with children in developing countries.
He says he didn’t want to only have his image associated with UNICEF, rather get more involved. He figures a trip to Haiti, a country ravaged last year by an earthquake, will be an eye-opening experience.
McIlroy plans to go to Haiti after the Memorial, then return to the United States for two days of practice at Congressional, then a trip to Pine Valley before the second major championship of the year.
