Talking Points: Marketing of Dirk

What’s the buzz from the world of sports? Here are some items that will have people talking:

1

Dirk who?

Basketball fans know who Dirk Nowitzki is, but most American consumers do not.

A recent study shows two-thirds of Americans do not know who the German superstar is. That cannot be a good thing for the shoe company that sponsors him.

By the way, what brand does Dirk wear?

Oh, it’s Nike.

But we had to look it up.

C’mon, dudes and dudettes at Nike, better start coming up with commercials for Dirk.

There is a new book that hit stores this week with a lot of juicy, behind-the-scenes look at the most powerful product in sports: ESPN.

Just don’t bring the book to work.

Sounds like just reading that thing could get a person in trouble with Human Resources.

Unless you work at ESPN, of course.

Mike Freeman of CBSsports.com reports that a source has told him a new deal between NFL owners and players could be done within two or three weeks.

The source then said that any little thing could force the talks to break down, though.

So, Freeman is pretty much reporting that a deal could be reached.

Or not.

Good gawd. Please, owners and players, end this lockout. Do it for the journalists, if not for each other.

We have a source that tells us the Mariners will win Friday night. Or not.

See? That doesn’t really make for breaking news.
