CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — Seth Maness took a shutout into the ninth inning and Chase McDonald broke open a close game with a grand slam in the seventh as East Carolina eliminated Navy 6-0 in the Charlottesville Regional on Saturday.

Maness (10-3), already the NCAA career victories leader among active pitchers, won for the 38th time against only 11 losses. He came within two outs of his second consecutive shutout before Andrew Hahn’s ninth-inning grounder brought home the only run for the Midshipmen.

Navy (33-25-1) was making its first tournament appearance since 2002.

Sam Long (5-6) worked into the seventh for Navy, leaving after a leadoff walk. Two more walks by reliever Preston Gainey loaded the bases before McDonald hit his fourth home run.
