PORT ANGELES, Wash. (AP) — The Nippon Paper Industries mill at Port Angeles is one of the last of its kind. It makes paper used in phone books.
The Peninsula Daily News reports it’s the last phone book paper mill in the United States. Competitors are located in Canada.
The mill has about 200 employees. Manager Harold Norlund says demand is down 18 percent over the last year. Fewer people are using phone books and they are not welcome in some places. Seattle has started an opt-out program for people who do not want to receive one.
Norlund says Nippon continues to invest in the Port Angeles mill, including $71 million for a biomass cogeneration project.
