Big trees to be planted at Eisenhower Park

WEST HAZEL DELL — Eisenhower Park, sloping down the hill from the school of the same name, has endured some serious criticism since it was installed a few years ago.

Trees were scrawny and tended to die. Weeds took over the landscaping. One neighbor used to call The Columbian, and anybody else who would listen, to complain on a regular basis. The school district agreed something needed to be done.

Now, you can help make Eisenhower Park into what it should have been. Friends of Trees, a Portland nonprofit that brings affordable trees to neighborhoods all over the region, plans to plant 25 large trees at Eisenhower on the morning of March 26.

Activities get under way with coffee and treats at 8:45 a.m. Volunteers are welcome. You don’t have to register — just show up at 8:45 a.m. and grab some coffee and treats, tools and gloves. Eisenhower Elementary School is located at 9201 N.W. Ninth Ave.; the park is behind the school.
