Fire District 6 will receive a federal grant of about $127,000, to buy high-visibility uniform jackets and reflective traffic cones to keep firefighters safer at traffic accident scenes.

The grant also will cover replacing about 40 old radios and will fund officer training programs, according to a bulletin from Dawn Johnson, spokeswoman for the fire district, which protects a large area that extends north from Salmon Creek to the fairgrounds area.

The money comes from a 2010 Assistance to Firefighters Grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Department of Homeland Security.

Under the terms, the fire district will match the grant with about $32,000 of its own funds.

Fire Chief Jerry Green said in the bulletin that he is pleased, adding, “This couldn’t come at a better time for us with the instability in our economy.”
