CLEVELAND (AP) — Victor Martinez is getting closer to returning to the Detroit Tigers lineup.
The veteran catcher-designated hitter, on the disabled list with a strained right groin, is scheduled to start a rehab assignment Monday with Triple-A Toledo.
The switch-hitter, signed as a free agent in November to a four-year, $50 million contract, has been out since April 19. He hit .250 with two homers and nine RBIs in 16 games before being hurt.
Martinez is with the Tigers in Cleveland and is expected to DH for at least two International League games with the Mud Hens in Pawtucket. He is eligible to be activated Wednesday.
