NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Close to 40 Saints players have gotten together to work out at practice fields and weight rooms at Tulane.

Quarterback Drew Brees, who organized the player-only workouts, says that it’s all about doing what they can while they are locked out from their regular facilities during the NFL labor dispute.

Several players who showed up are not currently under contract but were with the team last season and hope to return. Those include left tackle Jermon Bushrod, fullback Heath Evans and safeties Darren Sharper and Roman Harper.

Brees acknowledges a small risk of injuries while players are not covered by a collective bargaining agreement. But, he says, they’d likely be working out on their own anyway, so it’s better to do it with teammates.
