Steve Webb, superintendent of Vancouver Public Schools, received a top award Monday from the Washington Association of School Administrators at the group’s workshop in Chelan.
WASA singled out Vancouver’s commitment to “continuous, quality improvement” during budget crises. It praised the use of a new student intervention model, continuing choice programs (language immersion, International Baccalaureate, etc.) and the addition of Family Resource Centers.
Webb was named winner of the Robert J. Handy Most Effective Administrator Award for school districts of 2,000 or more students. Its namesake founded PEMCO Life Insurance Co. and was a Seattle teacher during the Depression era whose idea of providing loans to teachers evolved into the School Employees Credit Union of Washington.
Webb has been a Washington school administrator for 20 years, the last five in Vancouver. He and two other winners split a $10,000 award, to be used for personal or professional growth and/or to support and spread awareness of a successful school or district program.
