OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — The Washington Department of Corrections is holding hearings on three sites in the running for a new prison.
One is the Maple Lane School near Grand Mound, and area residents attended a Wednesday night hearing at Rochester High School.
The Olympian reports residents are concerned about traffic and other possible impacts.
The other possible locations are a site near the state prison at Shelton and a site near Bremerton that was formerly proposed for a NASCAR race track.
The new 1,000-inmate prison would cost $230 million and serve as the first place offenders go after they are sentenced. Most will stay about a month before they are transferred to another state prison.
