NEW YORK (AP) — Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano left Wednesday night’s game against the Kansas City Royals after getting hit by a pitch in the batting helmet.
Cano came to bat with two outs and the bases empty in the fifth inning against Royals reliever Nathan Adcock. The count was 1-1 when Adcock’s pitch hit Cano above the bill of his helmet, knocking him to the dirt in the batter’s box.
Cano quickly sat up as the ball ricocheted toward the Royals dugout. Manager Joe Girardi and team trainer Steve Donohue came sprinting from the dugout to check on him.
After standing up and making his way toward first base, the Yankees decided to bring in Eduardo Nunez as a pinch runner. He remained in the game to play second base.
The Yankees led 2-1.
