Longview, WA- On 5-13-2011 at 7:12 AM, the Cowlitz County 911 Dispatch Center received a call from the Longview Fibre Mill Safety Manager AT 300 Fibre Way, that they believed they had located a pipe bomb on the mill site property.

Cowlitz County Sheriff’s deputies went to the location and found a 2-inch wide galvanized pipe approximately 8 inches long which had caps on both ends. The item appeared to have been outside for quite some time and was located in an area of the mill site where they were excavating for a new building.

The Portland Bomb Squad was called and responded to the site. After examination they exploded one end of the pipe off and found the inside to be empty. No structures were nearby or in danger, and operations were not affected at the mill site.

At this time there are no leads as to how long or how it came to be there.
