PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Four young people told a Multnomah County sheriff’s sergeant who stopped to check on their pickup truck at a rest area in the Columbia River Gorge that they’d run out of gas. But the sergeant soon discovered the 1997 Ford had been reported stolen 21 hours earlier in Logan, Utah.

Lt. Mary Lindstrand says the four were taken into custody late Thursday night for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. Three pet rats belonging to one of the four were taken to a county animal shelter.
