FRISCO, Texas (AP) — Reigning AL MVP Josh Hamilton has been cleared to begin a minor league rehab assignment after an exam showed “significant healing” in the broken bone in his right arm.

The Texas Rangers say Hamilton will be the designated hitter Wednesday night for Double-A Frisco. Hamilton has been out since getting hurt April 12 at Detroit when trying to score with a headfirst slide into home.

After going with the Rangers to Chicago the past two days, Hamilton returned to Texas for a checkup with team physician Dr. Keith Meister and was cleared to begin rehab games.

Hamilton will be in the same lineup with Nelson Cruz, who has been at Frisco since Monday on rehab for a strained right quadriceps muscle.
