LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — The head of Switzerland’s anti-doping laboratory has denied claims that Lance Armstrong had a positive drug test at the 2001 Tour de Suisse which was covered up.
Martial Saugy says his Lausanne lab did find suspicious levels of banned blood-booster EPO in four urine samples from the race which Armstrong won, but he didn’t know if any belonged to the seven-time Tour de France winner.
Saugy tells Swiss daily Neue Zurcher Zeitung that the suspicious tests were not positive and “were not swept under the table.”
The scientist responded to Tyler Hamilton’s claims in an interview on “60 Minutes” that former teammate Armstrong used performance-enhancing drugs in 2001 and that cycling’s governing body helped him hide a positive test.
