DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Bahrain has asked Formula One’s governing body to reschedule its grand prix race this year and hopes to hold it in October or November.
Zayed Rashid Alzayani, chairman of the host Bahrain International Circuit, told The Associated Press on Tuesday the Gulf country was ready to “hold the race today” and that such an event would help bolster spirits of Bahrainis and give the battered economy a boost.
The decision on whether the race goes ahead, and when, will be made during Friday’s World Motor Sport Council meeting in Barcelona.
The Bahrain GP was to be the F1 season opener March 13 but was canceled by Bahrain’s Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa amid anti-government protests that have left 30 dead.
