BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) — Two senior Colombian officials say the top leader of the country’s main leftist rebel group has been killed in a military raid.

They say Alfonso Cano was killed Friday in Cauca state during an air and ground assault by Colombia’s military.

A $5 million reward had been out for Cano, who was the commander of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia.

The two officials agreed to confirm Cano’s death only if not quoted by name because they were not authorized to disclose the information.
