GET, the state’s Guaranteed Education Tuition program, is a great idea, especially for parents who are able to invest money into their child’s higher education.
But what about families who don’t have the money to invest every month? I think there is also value in students paying for their own education, as there are some very good life lessons in paying for one’s own college education.
Personally, I am happy I can say I’m paying for my own education, and it also helps to keep me grounded on my schoolwork. It’s easy to not show up to class, but when you’re paying for each class yourself, it gives it a whole new perspective. Being a college student, I can’t imagine what it would be like to pay $150,000 for four years of tuition. It makes me wonder if parents will be able to afford college for their children, and that makes the idea of GET even more relevant.
However, while GET is a great program, I also think it’s important for parents to realize that it is the student’s education, so shouldn’t they be the ones to pay for most of it?
