Steelers defense toothless in turnover department

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Steelers are putting up their typical superb numbers on defense in every category but perhaps the most critical one: Turnovers.

The Steelers are tied for last in the league with just four takeaways through nine games and are on pace to set an NFL record for fewest turnovers created in a season.

The Baltimore Colts manufactured just 11 turnovers during the strike-shortened 1982 season. The Washington Redskins hold the 16-game record for turnover futility, taking it away from opponents just 12 times in 2006.

Safety Troy Polamalu calls the problem a combination of bad luck and tough bounces. The All-Pro has let at least three interceptions bounce off his hands this season.

The Steelers say they expect things to turn around soon, hopefully starting Sunday at Cincinnati.
