WASHINGTON (AP) — Tony Taylor scored 20 points, and coach Mike Lonergan had a successful George Washington debut Friday night as the Colonials rolled to a 64-48 win over Maryland-Eastern Shore in the season opener for both teams.

Aaron Ware and David Pellom scored nine points apiece for the Colonials, who started off sloppy but took the lead midway through the first half and didn’t look back.

George Washington led 30-22 at halftime and extended its lead to as many as 25 points in the second half.

Hillary Haley scored 12 points and Tyler Hines grabbed 15 rebounds to go with nine points for the Hawks, who couldn’t overcome 24 turnovers and shot 29 percent in falling for the fifth time in as many tries to the Colonials.

Lonergan came to George Washington after six seasons — and one NCAA Tournament appearance — at Vermont.
