LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) — Leonard Washington scored 14 points in his Wyoming debut and Larry Shyatt made a successful return as coach Saturday as the Cowboys opened the season with a 78-39 victory over Western State.
Washington sat out last season after transferring from USC. Shyatt led Wyoming to the NIT in 1998, then left after only one season. Following stops at Clemson and Florida, he was hired back by Wyoming.
Luke Martinez had 13 points and Francisco Cruz added 11 for the Cowboys.
Steven Aldridge had nine points for Western State, a Division II school.
Wyoming bolted to a 7-0 lead, then stretched it to 18-2, 32-7 and 48-15 at halftime. Riley Grabau’s jumper with 7:46 to go put Wyoming up 78-29.
Wyoming’s Afam Muojeke, plagued by knee injuries the past two seasons, played for the first time since Jan. 4, scoring two points and grabbing four steals in 12 minutes but also committing six turnovers.
