HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) — DeAndre Kane scored 26 points as Marshall beat Northwestern State 83-61 on Saturday night.
Damier Pitts added 13 points and Dennis Tinnon had 10 for the Thundering Herd (3-0).
Marshall used a strong advantage in rebounding to build a 43-29 halftime lead and never looked back. The Thundering Herd held a 59-30 edge on the boards and turned 24 offensive rebounds into 25 second-chance points compared to four for the Demons (2-2).
Marshall also shot well — 43.5 percent from the field (30 of 69) — despite making only 6 of 22 from 3-point-range. The Thundering Herd built a 17-point lead in the first half and the margin remained in double digits the rest of the way. Marshall’s lead was at least 20 points for the final 5 minutes of the game.
Shamir Davis scored 11points and Demetrice Jacobs added 20 for the Demons.
