BREMERTON, Wash. (AP) — Kitsap Transit is testing a lightweight catamaran for passenger ferry service between Bremerton and Seattle.

And one of the tests is has to pass is in Rich Passage where ferry wakes have damaged the shoreline in years past.

Officials, including Congressman Norm Dicks, took a test cruise Tuesday.

The research has shown that the faster the boat goes, the less wake is generated.

The Kitsap Sun reports (http://bit.ly/v55I5L ) the optimum speed seems to be about 45 mph for the lowest waves and 37 mph for best fuel mileage.

Kitsap Transit plans to test the passenger ferry service next year for six months. The trip across Puget Sound between Seattle and Bremerton will take about 30 minutes.
