NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Guard Calvin Newell, who had moved into the starting lineup and sharply increased his production this season, plans to leave Oklahoma’s basketball team at the end of the semester for personal reasons.
Coach Lon Kruger announced Newell’s decision Thursday, a day before the Sooners (4-1) host Sacramento State.
Newell says he has been distracted by family issues the past few months and feels the need to transfer closer to his Philadelphia home.
Newell was the Sooners’ second-leading scorer this season with 13 points per game. He had averaged only 3.5 points last season as a reserve point guard but moved to the wing after Kruger took over as head coach.
Newell was the team’s leading scorer in two of five games this season.
