Savannah State tops cold-shooting Hampton 65-49

HAMPTON, Va. (AP) — Deric Rudolph scored 21 points and Savannah State easily beat cold-shooting Hampton 65-49 Thursday night in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

Rudolph was 5 for 8 on 3-point attempts for the Tigers (3-5) and 6 of 6 on free throws. Collectively, Savannah State shot 8 for 15 from 3-point range.

Rashad Hassan also flustered Hampton (3-4). He made 7 of 9 shots from the floor, including his only 3-point attempt. Hassan finished with 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Preston Blackmon chipped in with 11 points for Savannah State, which led 39-26 at halftime.

Darrion Pellum was the only Hampton player to finish in double figures with 15 points. But he shot just 5 of 15, missing all five 3-pointers he attempted. Hampton shot 30.4 percent (14 of 46) and was 0 for 12 from the arc.
