BOSTON (AP) — The Boston Bruins have raised another banner to the rafters at the TD Garden.
The Bruins celebrated their sixth Stanley Cup victory on Thursday night with a pregame ceremony honoring last season’s champions. The Cup was passed around on the ice among the players, who then posed for pictures with it. Game 7 of the finals in June was in Vancouver, so it was the first chance many Boston fans had to see the Cup.
The team then brought out a half dozen players from the 1972 championship team to help raise the banner. Among them were Bobby Orr, John Bucyk and Milt Schmidt, who was the general manager of the last Bruins champion. Todd Bailey was there to represent his father, Ace, who died in the Sept. 11 attacks.
The half-hour ceremony was before the regular-season opener against the Philadelphia Flyers.
